If being conscious is 'having an awareness of ones environment. And we are a product of the universe and in fact ARE a part of the universe. And we are aware of it. does that make the universe aware? Are we a way for the universe to know itself?
I know that is a bit out there...but let it roll around in your mind before you totally dismiss it.

The difficulty with consciousness is that nobody really knows what it is. It can't be put under a microscope and examined because it can't be isolated like some sort of thing apart from everything else. Besides which, the very act of examining consciousness requires the presence of consciousness to do the examining, so the act of examination influences what is found.....Poppers
This is a very good point. We can only examine consciouness from our own perspective can't we? And our own understanding of what it is we are looking for elsewhere? I think you would really need to think outside the box to be able to consider other forms of consciousness. Especially when we don't even seem to really understand our own. Other than, it ceases to exist when we do.
Although...there is that school of thought that believes that consciousness exists seperate from ourselves. I don't see how that is possible when without our brain...we are unconscious and aware of nothing. BUT...and it is a BIG BUT...what if there is another sort of consciousness that the universe all shares? There...I'm really going into space now aren't I? But, it's just a thought.

Sure, why not? Why couldn't there be leprechauns and fairies outside my window? There just aren't, that's why. Thought is a process based on chemical reactions.

I am not talking about a god here...just consciousness. We have it...so why not? What makes us special? If you are going to compare consciousness to leprechauns and fairies I think it may be you that is making the big leap.
We know consciousness is REAL (unless you are saying it isn't). So it IS possible for it to exist in some other form that our senses, limited as they are, may be unable to pick up or recognise. For example, we know we are only capable of seing a few colours in the spectrum of light. Does that mean the other colours do not exist? Fortunately we have been able to develop a way to be able to see these colours like infa red and ultra violet. But if we hadn't...would they not exist on the specrum?Would that make them just as likely as fairies or leprechauns?
We don't know that a god is real so comparing a god concept to a fairy concept is a reasonable comparison IMO. But then maybe I'm biased because I don't believe in a god...lol

The notion that because the universe is really big
Ah...I see what you are saying. But...that is not the theory at all. This theory is that it all originated from something so small. Everything was once one small 'thing'. That is the connection. We can consider ourselves seperate...or different to the rest of the universe (ie. only we have some form of thought or conciousness). But how can that be...if we are only one tiny little product OF it.
This is not looking at the really big...it is looking at the really small. AND it is simply an IDEA based on science.
but it's supremely arrogant to imagine that because humans have that faculty, that consciousness is therefore implicitly present everywhere in the universe.
It seems more arrogant to me to believe that we are so special that only we posses this thing we call consciousness. Why could it not exist everwhere in one form or another? What are the chances that humans, in this vast universe developed this independently from the universe itself, the universe we are part of?
Isn't to assume one, just as arrongant as to assume the other?
